SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.60 g), circa 440-430. Charioteer driving fast quadriga to left, holding goad in his right hand and reins with both; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, ketos. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙΟ-Ν Head of Arethousa to right, her hair tied into a bun at the top of her head, wearing double spiral earring and plain necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 605.3 (this coin; V295/R411). Dewing 817 (same dies). SNG ANS 199 (same dies). Nicely toned and with a lovely head of Arethousa of magnificent style. Flan fault and some die rust on the obverse and with minor deposits and light marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
